DFI Day 6
DFI - Day 6
What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Vicki talked to use via "hangouts" so that we could practice commenting and un-muting today. She spoke about being Connected, within the school, community, nation and globally. Students need to share to make connections. The connected network was created in 2006. There are many different types of schools. 5 new clusters joined in 2015.
This year, 2019 there are 22,000 learners. These schools have the "Shared Language". We're all working together via " learn, create, share".
Refer to slide 7.
Manaiakalani PLD - publicly visible website. Helps with working together, lots of ideas.
Connected through Twitter.
Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu - classes buddying up around NZ. One class comments on the other schools blogs one week and then they swap around.
Blogger Audience- I need to look at DB's toolkit slides.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Google forms - I could use these to pre-test prior knowledge as I thought I could use it them for my recipes so students could add photos to the recipes I would give them.
Google maps - can use for Cultural Foods topics.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I made a chart today from data from a blog. The chart shows the number of blogs a student did per month over 4 years.
This will work well to show data on Annual report and I intend to do this for 2/3 Childcare for 2019 so I can compare with 2020.

DFI - Day 5
DFI -Day 5
Agenda
Google education - tests to try
From Dorothy
Visible Teaching and Learning.
Make the learning journey visible to everyone, whanau. (in and out of school)
Likened learning to a maze. You can get lost if you don't have any, many guidelines
Success - students who have done well have read the teachers mind. This is what it looks like and how we are going to get there would be a good way to show, tell students. Eg, show the class a video of the whole dance and then teach them the start, next day do again and add the next phase of the dance.
Visible learning is rewindable as all of the past lessons are available.
Primary students have different coloured book boxes and the students know if they are in a lower, higher group. Dorothy mentioned collaboration where a better reader reads with a not-so-interested reader.
Visible teaching is accessible, available and advances the learning.
"Class on air" discussed
Teaching as Inquiry.
I spent time today on Hapara workspace looking at the work other teachers had added, lots on Food and Nutrition, as they are public I made some copies.
Vicki showed us how to make the cards coloured so the tasks link.
Home Ec website - I started this, deciding that I would just do Home Ec with the 6 buttons for Yr7 & 8, 9,10,11,12,13.

I used food photos from "Unsplash"

- What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Today Dorothy spoke about "Share" , connected learners' , we need connections and it is great to get responses. In 2005 Youtube started. It meant instant sharing via Bebo etc. It was public and in real-time.
The schools wanted to look at how the could share - assembly, Yearbook. Manaiakalani wants to continue with the things we do but let digital technologies enhance the project, eg. college yearbook is printed and photos added etc.
The digital age has changed the audience - become a global audience.
Sharing with purpose -for an audience. When I went to school I wrote for my teacher alone. Now students share globally. My teacher was a compulsory audience.
Globally, people who choose to look at your work etc, are an "authentic audience".
Manaiakalani chose " Blogger" as their main online space to share. Students were/are taught how to use"Blogger", not their own "personal" space.
Blogger is a tool for teaching students about being " cybersmart"
- What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
The multimodal format for students will grab their attention and give them choices for the work they could do. Also, a class site will be useful.
Danni Stones - Multimodal site- What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Making a class site,Garden to plates around the globe
I would want to put a suitable site into Hapara to connect them to certain classes.

DFI Day 2
DFI course Day 2 Monday 11th November
- What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional? We looked at Hangouts, making an invitation via the calendar to a hangout, replying to the invite( got declined, but that's ok), presenting to the group after unmuting since you should always start with a muted mic. My wee chromebook didn't cope too well with the load , was a bit sluggish. The Hapara dashboard is going to be super useful with my classes next year and I am looking forward to setting this up.
Hapara will save time and all students will have their work shared.
- What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Via the Hapara dashboard ,I am going to share recipes that the students can make, photograph, make comments and variations/substitutes.
- What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?I need to go at my own pace and once I have done something once I can usually workout the pathway to do it again

DFI - Day 1
What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
DFI day 1 agenda
What a great day. I have learnt so much but I need to keep doing these tasks so I don't forget them.
Hangouts with Dorothy. I haven't done this before.
I knew a bit about Manaiakalani but didn't realise it started so many years ago. The thinking of this group was ahead of its time.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I liked doing the tasks as we were taught them and then getting a chance to trial it.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
I would like to use Icons for docs with my classes for brochure making and I have asked about "clicking on my posters pictures" and there are tasks behind the pictures. We will do that on another day.
I would use the task we did with the "Summer Learning Journey Researching"
Embedding images.
